Please nobody suggest W.G. Grace. He was a cheat and a con. He played as an "amateur" but received payment for playing. His antics on the field were no better. On being cleaned bowled he'd pick up the bails place them back on top of the stumps and say to all: "They've (the spectators) have come to see me bat, not you (the bowler) bowling".

Men - David Beckham. I know I'll get criticism for that but has contributed huge amounts on and off the field. His contributions will stand the test of time and the country will appreciate what it had in terms of Beckham the footballer once he has stopped playing.

Women - Tough one. I'm going to go for Paula Radcliffe. Hugely successful in her field, very committed (as evidenced by coming back and winning after a kid).
