Also screwed up a lot of windows 2000 computers by thinking that jpg's with a specific sequence of pixels were corrupt files if said jpegs were copied after the patch, "fixed the problem," and the next time a scan disk was performed promptly said said files were invalid and could not be recovered.

Took me 4 weeks to recover my photos from my 800+ cd's! BASTARDS!

Its one "patch" I never run now.

Sticky: January Black Tuesday's two patches
Posted by woody on 08 January 2008 - 18:51:21 Windows XP

The January Black Tuesday patches are out, and I see no compelling reason to install them yet.

The December Black Tuesday patches caused all sorts of grief. I suggest you hold off on installing them, too, for the moment.

Office 2003 Service Pack 3 and Office 2007 Service Pack 1 are still in their formative stages. Hold off on them, too. The negative reaction to Office 2003 Service Pack 3, in particular, has prodded Microsoft into issuing Registry file patches. Let the other guys get the arrows in their backs.

An interesting developement...microsoft actually explaining in depth each update its a step forward

Sticky: Patch everything except Office 2007

It's time to go ahead and apply all the outstanding updates for Windows (all versions) and Office 2003.

But do NOT install Office 2007 Service Pack 1 just yet.

The December and January Black Tuesday patches for Windows seem to be behaving themselves, although there are exceptions.

If you have Windows XP, make sure you've upgraded to Internet Explorer 7 before applying the KB 942615 December patch. Many people report problems using Internet Explorer 6 after applying the patch - so nip the problems in the bud by installing IE 7, if you haven't already done so.

Note that I said "install IE 7." Don't use it - use Firefox. You have to install IE 7 because Microsoft has woven it so, ahem, deftly into Windows XP that security holes in IE 6 crop up all over the place.

Be aware of the fact that Office 2003 Service Pack 3 will make it impossible for you to open very old versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint files in the SP3 versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. (You also won't be able to open Corel Draw CDR files directly inside the Office apps.) The best solution: download and install the Excel file viewer, the Word file viewer, and the PowerPoint file viewer. That way you can look at the older files and, if you need to make changes, copy from the viewer into a new document, with a newer format.

As far as I can tell, Microsoft still hasn't fixed the x078F error that people were encountering on trying to install Office 2007 Service Pack 1, which I described two weeks ago. There are many known outstanding problems with Office 2007 SP1, including this silly 78F error. Hold on until Microsoft sorts things out.

Bottom line: be aware of the problems, install IE 7 if you haven't already, then patch everything except Office 2007. If you have Office 2003 and need to look at older files, download the viewers.

I'm moving us down to MS-DEFCON 4: There are isolated problems with current patches, but they are well-known and documented here. Check this site to see if you're affected and if things look OK, go ahead and patch.

UPDATE: If applying Office 2003 Service Pack 3 makes your Access databases go crazy, check out the hotfix in KB 945674. It doesn't cure all of the Access problems, but it should help with many of them.
