Bowie was pretty awful in most things. Just about managed in Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence and The Man Who Fell To Earth was hardly a stretch for him. Best performance, as Pilate in The Last Temptation Of Christ or Tesla in The Prestige.

He was more than OK in merry x-mas mr lawrence IMHO

I still say you'd call him a better singer than an actor

Natalie Imbruglia was on neighbours as well before she launched her singing career and she is by far a better singer/songwriter than an actor
yet someone has cast her in the film Elise

I can imagine there would be actors/actresses more qualified/better suited to the parts but because they don't come with an instant fanbase their not even in the running........call me cynical

Merry Christmas was perhaps a little unfair for showcasing his acting skills. He was up against Tom Conti and Takeshi, both of whom were superb and deserving of acting recognition, as well as Jack Thompson in his worst performance and Ryuchai Sakamoto (who was wooden as hell and should have stuck to providing the sublime score).

The trouble for the Kylies and Natalies of this world is that they have a fanbase elsewhere and cannot really go for anything that will shock or alienate that fanbase. Bowie doesn't really exist: not for nothing he was known as a chameleon.

Not many singers do make a successful transition to acting (Tom Waits was brilliant as Renfield in Dracula).
