He really was a very, very fine actor. It's easy to overlook, he wasn't a show-off. Lovely comic skills in 10 Things I Hate About You and A Knight's Tale and totally commanding understatement in Brokeback Mountain. The latest Dark Knight trailer suggests that his performance as The Joker could be very skewered and wonderful. His death is a big loss to cinema.
