I'll obviously stand corrected but wasn't the point of New Labour being formed because of what happened in the 70's.

The good folks in the Thatcher / Tory era wanted a change and were rebelling on the poll tax, closing mines and ripping the hearts out of entire communities etc but couldn't vote Labour because they remembered what is was like sitting in the front room at night with only candles burning.

It was funny watching him in Tokyo. Giving a speech of world economic doom & gloom, then for no apparent reason he looked at the camera and gave a false smile, then went back to saying how millions would starve! His publicity people have obviously told him to smile more often and try to appear half human, but the twunt just lobs the smiles in at any random point, rather than where they are appropriate

Most people had a job to go to in the 70's. The thatcher the milk snatcher came along and had the cheekl to scare people into voting tory to cut unemployment believe it or not(labour isnt working..with a pic of a stretching dole queue) Then she got in and unemployment went through the roff and social division were created like never before. My own personal memories of the 80s were dole queues stretching round the corner and homelessness in cardboard boxes everytime i went for a pint .

They most likely suffered or knew people who were suffering hardship during the years under the Conservatives

In Australia we've had all the bad things,crippling high interest rates,high unemployments & high inflation under both sides of Politics in the past 40 years

You might want to remind your Aussie friend that under the Conservatives/Liberals in little more than a decade they've managed to make obtaining your first home almost impossible for anyone not earning 100K a year

When the next generation cant afford to buy their first home or find a place to rent that doesnt eat up the bulk of their wage just watch Capitalism fall apart
