"Are you aware of the concept of evidence? The fact that Barry George lived a couple of streets from Jill Dando and was the local weirdo does not mean that he killed her."

I agree. Whether he committed the murder and whether he can be proven to have committed the murder are two entirely separate matters.

there just seems to be a total lack of hard evidence in this case

George was well known in the area, but there are no witnesses placing him at the crime scene

he clearly has no skills to modify a gun or make ammunition and there is no evidence he bought any of these things

he obsessed about celebs but there is no evidence he singled out Dando

calmly walking up to someone, putting a gun to the back of the head, pulling the trigger then calmly walking away and continuing to be calm for years after hardly seems like the actions of a slightly strange man

no forensic evidence at all- no blood stains, no residue, no powder burns, no particles on Dando from George or vice versa from clothes/hair etc

no murder weapon linking to George

no bullets or bullet making equipment found to link to George

I find it hard to believe that a man of such low iIQ could cover up all evidence of such a close range killing

it seems he's been covicted of being a bit strange and liking celebs, even some of the jury who have seen all the evidence have said without the now discredited forensic evidence they would have aquitted

This case strikes me very much like the Colin Stagg/Rachel Nickel case - easy target to get a conviction

You are right diplodocus, there is a lack of hard evidence.

However, the original point of this thread as started by Arch Stanton is not whether there is proof that Barry George did it, but whether or not he was capable of doing it.

Most people seem to agree that he was capable of doing it, but whether there is proof is another matter.

true, anyone is capable of murder, but is he capable of covering it up so well, i'm not so sure

personally this case has had a bad smell about it from the start

Does Max Moseley's fascination with the SS worry you? It's probably a lot more established than George's interest in the SAS.

You're probably inclined to believe that George is a 'fantasist' and yet when he allegedly says something you want to believe like 'I bought a gun for ?55' he suddenly becomes a reliable witness. Effectively this is saying that he's reliable only when he's implicating himself.

Barry George as 'stalker' is also a construction of the prosecution. As the guy has learning disabilities/ low intelligence or whatever he's likely to be quite awkward, inarticulate and unaware of social convention when it comes to the opposite sex. It's easy for the Police to lead women into saying they've been 'stalked' by George because it's an emotive term and gives credibility to the case they were constructing. I can't remember exactly what previous George had but I don't think he raped anyone as was said in an earlier thread. It might be said that he could be awkward around women but you'd really need to qualify that awkwardness which takes a bit more thought and perspective than just calling him a 'stalker'.

Robches said that Barry George "couldn't even organise his way to the toilet".

However, according to the Guardian:

"George persuaded a stadium in Derby to stage a stunt in which he jumped over a row of double decker buses on his rollerskates. The stadium sold hundreds of tickets for the event. At the last moment, having seen the platform and ramp which had been constructed, George tried to back down but eventually plucked up courage and managed to complete the leap."

Barry George also managed to fake a photo which made it look as though he'd been photographed with Freddie Mercury. Many people accepted this fake picture as a genuine photo, so I don't think George was the complete incompetent that some posters in this thread would have us believe.
