I believe that Carol managed to a get a Third in each part of her Tripos at Cambridge, gaining her admittance to the exclusive Nines Club. You really have to be fucking around to a serious extent to get a Douglas three years running like that. Kudos to her for blagging the Countdown gig.
If it is true, and they offered her a new contract with a 90% pay cut and 48 hours to consider it, they were in effect telling her to fuck off. That's not a serious offer, it's the old tin tack.

In its present form, Countdown is really on its last legs and all the recent happenings suggest they're either stupidly trashing it (why not let it end with some dignity?) or going for a thorough overhaul.
Interesting to read that Carol had previously clashed with bosses over them wanting to introduce a premium phone line element to the show. If it does continue after the departures, don't be surprised to see it take this direction.
