This has more to do with the big drug companies who have been selling us drugs to combat non problems for years, lots of things are bad for you but to invent a nicotine patch which puts it straight into your body, well i would rather inhale and take a chance !happy!

Well, I have now given up the pipe and, on the advice of Reggie Perrin, I have returned to the cigarettes.

However, after just two days, I am getting out of breath just walking from the road and up the drive to my house, although I am assuming that this is purely psychosomatic for, as Mr Perrin pointed out, there is little difference between pipe smoking and cigarette smoking.

Bizarrely, when I first gave up cigarettes, a year ago, I could not even walk fifty yards but, after only two weeks of smoking the pipe, I was taking daily walks of between two and three miles.

Also, when I was still smoking cigarettes, the only way I could indulge in my hobby of fishing was to hire a taxi to take me directly to the water. It was even better if I could persuade one of my students to come along to do any carrying, if needed.

Move forward though to last summer and I was using public transport to get me within a mile or so of the water, then walking the rest of the way carrying about fifty pounds of equipment.

My doctor was flabbergasted by the improvement in my health. He joined me in attributing this new lease of life, so to speak, solely to my switch to the pipe from cigarettes.

Now though, it has been shown by Mr Perrin that we were wrong (and I am sure that he must be right for, despite my ten years as a Yale University professor, I feel humbled by his erudition) and that this astonishing improvement in my health was due to some other, as yet unidentified, thing.

I'll keep you all posted.

You could be smoking your pipe (outside of course) in a pub and have a picture of a fat chav bird vomiting, on the side of your pint glass! I am a smoker and no pics will put me off. In fact I get my cigs abroad so I can't understand what the warnings on the side of the packet say. As they say, ignorance is bliss Cough! cough! COUGH!!! !wink!
