You could even take it back to the first Japanese invasion of
Manchuria; and the Russo-Japanese war in '05 !!
Add Serbian nationalism [largely a result of Hapsburg/Ottoman/
Hellenic oppression], and the seeds are all there........

Not really, because the conflicts you mention were followed by a cessation of hostilities. The Japanese invasion in 1931 led to an unbroken chain of fighting til 1945. There are always seed to conflicts, but that does not mean they are the start of hostilities.

But they're still root-causes, aren't they?

Britain summer 1940 - stood on our own against the hun - I recall something about a 'FEW'.
Still - it was piggin' close and Hitler's intervention stuffed it for the Germans - doubt that they would have got across the channel in the face of the Royal Navy.
And even if they had, Capt Mainwaring and his Home guard were ready and waiting with their broomsticks, and converted butchers vans !!! Besides it was a well known fact that the Germans didn't "like it up em"
Irreverent Humpy !wink!

I just heard on Sky News about two 18 year old lads who joined up together. This was quite recently and after training they were sent to Afghanistan. One is coming home severally injured, the other is coming home in a bodybag! Can you believe that Tony Blair is a religious man? If there is an after-life I know which way Blair's elevator will be going. Not UP that's for sure...

A clear-cut victory, yes; but a battle, not a war. I think the
original question referred to a 'conflict', which is usually read
as a war. Hitler really screwed-up on the BoB- how could he go
from tactical genius to strategic moron in asuch a short time?

Oh, they do; and I've got the videos to prove it : -)

Seems a shame that our troops are put in harm's way in support of the corrupt Karzai government. In addition to that parallel with the situation 40 years ago in Vietnam, there are others, foremost being the lack of a definate goal and a clear plan to achieve it. Another would be the belief that simply sending more troops will solve the mess.

Agree totally.
Karzai is, alas, the best of a very bad bunch.
Had I the power, I'd put a woman in charge and REALLY piss
the Taleban off : -))

Funny you should think that. I said years ago that we should bombard the Taliban with hard core porn and really mess with their heads. Sadly my idea was not taken seriously by the powers that be. The rest is history.
