What about James Hunt, Stanley Matthews and Henry Cooper? All worthy of consideration in my book.

Daley Thompson, to excel at 10 different events, as well as others, (he was a hell of a tennis player, i'm lead to believe) puts him ahead of the one event specialists.

This is slightly off topic but i'm sure I read somewhere that although referred to as a Russian he was a Latvian. Whatever he is I saw yet another programme a few weeks ago about England's seemingly always to be only triumph and it revealed that this linesman had 20 or was it 50 of his relatives murdered by the Nazis in ww2. So when asked if it was a goal he was always going to say yes, there was no doubt who he wanted to win that day for obvious reasons. I don't think it crossed the line.

Have to give one or two a mention from across the Severn Bridge - Jimmy Wilde, John Charles and of course Gareth Edwards.
