In times gone by, being the wiper of the royal arse was a highly sought after and privileged position. It's where we get "Privy Council" from. A Privy Council is the body that traditionally advises a monarch in affairs of state and was made up of only the most trusted followers of the monarch. The head of the Privy Chamber was essentially the Monarch's private secretary and had unhindered access to the Monarch... a very powerful position indeed! The Grooms of the Stool were generally the sons of prominent courtiers who in turn would rise up to equally prominent positions in the court.

If you had been a young lady in 17th century Britain and the young man in question had said he was one of the Grooms of the Stool, you would have married him in a shot as he was a young man destined for great power and wealth!

There's an old 'Derek and Clive' routine from Peter Cook and Dudley Moore where they discuss the worst jobs they've ever 'ad. One of them recounts that he once had a job "Pulling lobsters out of young lady's arseholes".

I think this sketch was done around the late 60's/early 70's when it would have been banned for any public airing.

Specifically it was Jayne Mansfield's arse... off Malibu... Malibu di bum bum.

In the "Derek & Clive (Live)" recording of 1976 Derek (Dudley Moore) is the one who has that job, while Clive (Peter Cook) reckons the worst job he ever had was collecting Winston Churchill's bogies

I met a bloke in Canada who was Dutch and during the war in Holland his dad made him wank their bull off so he could inseminate their herd.
Aint the top job in the world, and that's for sure.

I have all the original Derek & Clive albums on vinyl, pretty much all bought at the time they came out

I'm a big fan of Pete and Dud in all their various incarnations, and can repeat many of their famous sketches word for word (along with many Python sketches) if anybody wants to be bored at a dinner party! LOL
