Clegg confusion deepens

I've just heard a quote from Clegg's interview with Nicky Campbell on BBC Radio this morning where he says he WOULD work with the Labour party and Gordon Brown, even if the Labour party came third in the vote but were the biggest party in terms of seats.

So on Sunday's Andrew Marr show he wouldnt prop up the Labour party if they came third. On Monday he would prop up the Labour party as long as Gordon Brown did not remain as Prime Minister. On Tuesday he would potentially work with the Labour party even if Brown remained as leader.

There you go, is that clear now?

He's made a right bollocks of that.

Cheers

Nah, I don't think so. You see the lack of experience as a negative thing, I don't think it's that big a deal and doesn't give the Tories, for instance, any meaningful advantage.

I just don't buy that when Labour won their first election in nearly 2 decades, in 1997, they fished around their back-benchers begging for advice on how the old guys ran the country in 1977.

But hey, we can assume different things, David.

I admire a man that is willing to admit he might be wrong.....lol.

You see it as confusion, I see it as a man adapting to changes in tactics and strategy.

For instance, these last 22 years the Tories have led us to believe the winter of discontent was all the fault of Labour. Now, apparently, it was actually down to having a hung parliament the term before.

"You appear to be missing the point."

Your reply "Nah, I don't think so. You see the lack of experience as a negative thing, I don't think it's that big a deal and doesn't give the Tories, for instance, any meaningful advantage. "

You are completely and utterly missing the point.

You need to look more closely at what happened to Labour government in the 1970's and make the effort to understand how the success of Thatcher in 79 impacted on the Labour manifesto of 1997 and how Blair ran the government.

The 1997 Labour manifesto and what came to be known as New Labour was built out of Callaghan's failure to stay in power and the whole "Britain isnt working" charge levied at a government too close to the unions. The involvement of the IMF in the Labour government had also a huge impact on the 97 manifesto and the whole approach to the early years of the Blair government.

You presumably remember Brown's catch phrase "Prudence, prudence". The reason for that approach was to kill the Labour government weakness which Thatcher capitalised on i.e. that Labour government = trade union dominance and loads of strikes + financial incompetence.

Experience in government tells you not only what to do, but what not to do.
That's the point. And there were plenty Labour people who had experience of government in the 70's to provide that input into strategy and practice.

Anyway I will leave you to say "Nah" "Whateva" or "as long as Clegg has Running British governments for Idiots he will be spot on".

I've made my point. As always, you are more than welcome to disagree.

Cheers
D

Clegg is starting to sound desperate.

All you've shown is a party learning from the opposition more than any experience they're tapping into from 18 years before. And you can pick up on, and quote, as many 'nahs' and 'whatevas' you like (for comical effect maybe?) but you've not really convinced me that because the Tories were in office 13 years ago they somehow will fit into governing the country much easier.

I know Cleggy's tv success has irked you a little but really you're clutching at straws with this 'experience' thing. !happy!

You should have retorted with,"Nah, whateva!"

!laugh!

If anyone who has just seen (or sees) Clegg's performance on C4 News just now and still votes for him, you need locking up. The message is clear from that. Vote Clegg and you might as well put a tick in the Tory box instead.

Yeah, yeah....same old, same old. The Tories are saying the reverse. They both need to change the record.
