Modern vehicle brake systems are designed and made to be used for "braking" in ALL conditions. When descending steep inclines then holding in a lower ratio will assist, but, I iterate, modern brake systems do not really need engine assist except to provide the power assist to the brake system. That means that the driver need only apply reasonable presssure to the brake pedal. Without power assist one would be standing on the brakes for dear life, as we used to trying to stop a Mk9 Land Rover in reverse.

My first car was a 1960 model which had drum brakes all round and of course, they were not power brakes or even close! I remember going down a long hill and shitting myself trying to get the brakes to bite near the bottom. I didn't realise the old drum brakes could fade like this. As you say, modern brakes are a vast improvement but I still think automatics are for men who wear fishnet stockings and tarty make-up.
