The reasons for net immigration increase

As far as I am aware the reasons for this increase are:
1. A decrease in the numbers leaving the country. Presumably because of lack of opportunities overseas in countries such as Spain.
2. An increase in the number of overseas students coming into the country.
3. Additional people coming from eastern Europe. This may be related to some of the first wave of Polish workers getting established in work and then providing support for wives, brothers, sisters etc.
As I pointed out in an earlier post, despite the Cameron bluster there is nothing a UK government can do about 1. unless it applies to asylum seekers and overstayers, or 3. with regard to EU members.
And with regard to 2. given the parlous state of funding for universities, most educational institutions welcome overseas students with welcome arms because they tend to pay fees much higher than British nationals.
Cheers

I must say I'm very much looking forward to standing to the terraces at Wembley when England are playing and seeing all the former Somalians (now very English in their attitudes and loyalties) around me who will be wearing their England shirts and waving their England flags.
I am looking forward also to having discussions with lots of former Columbian's and Iraqi's (now very English in their associations and loyalties) and engaging in discussions about Churchill, Cromwell and the Celts.
I think you are living in a dream world my friend...

You completely and utterly misunderstood my post. Your whole spiel is about people settling here who can't speak the language at all, know nothing about Britain etc etc.
If you had bothered to read the link you would have found out it tests people's understanding of English and UK institutions etc as a prerequisite to getting the right to stay.
I have nowhere said that this is a magic wand which will make Somalis very loyal to England etc.
Keep up!

I was already aware of this test. It would not be very hard to pass. I probably know enough about Australia, for example, to pass an equivilant test to settle permanently there (I've visited and learned about the place). One can learn enough information to become sufficiently knowledgeable to settle somewhere. That will not make them as loyal to the place as they insist the place is to them, and that is a shame.
And another thing, Max

I am not sure what rose tinted world you inhabit Max, but it seems to me that there are many, many white English people who show no loyalties to England, know next to nothing about the country they have lived in all their life and are indeed, semi-literate.
Send them on the first boat to Somalia I say. They haven't integrated at all.

I guess the difference with those white Brits you refer to is they would not have any historic family assciation with any other place so they would not be able to show loyalty to anywhere else. Those people must have loyalty to nowhere then! People who settle here who came from abroad, or whose parents did, have the potentail to show patronage to elsewhere because their family came from elsewhere originally. As I've said, that is wrong in my view. If you demand to be viewed as a Brit, be a Brit.

Maybe because it is information that is being suppressed as far as possible, I was not aware until you started this thread.
Are all foreign students classed as immigrants rather than at least non-European students only having right of entry until their course is complete?
As well as the school, college and university leavers there are those who have been or will soon be out of a job because of government cutbacks as well as private sector closures, downsizing and relocation out of the UK.
We are all supporting these people and their families while the short and long term ill, disabled and elderly are finding services cut, home help charges rising etc.
I'm sure all of us when in another country short or long term would respect the local laws and cultures yet others come here and then complain about all they do not like.
If that group do not like what we teach in our schools simply move to where their children will be taught as they wish, not attack our education system in any way let alone assault a teacher.
Also, certainly outside main tourist destinations where English is widely spoken, we would ensure we could speak and read enough of the language to get by. Yet here we print documents in many languages, provide support staff in schools, the police have to use interpreters when called out to incidents and carrying out investigations etc which are all a burden on public funds.
As to the test for for naturalisation or indefinite right to stay I'm sure it is much easier to pass than the Dutch one....

Hi Max,
You appear completely obsessed with the term "loyalty" as if people who have always lived here, white British for example, are "loyal" to this country. A lot of them could not give a toss for the country.
This is an insane argument.

Actually Mr Slip I am indeed saying that our youngsters should learn
some foreign languages and get off their asses ! I find it astonishing
that you regularly knock the UK in many of your blogs.....but when it
comes to immigrants suddenly the UK is a land flowing in milk and honey !
People like you will naturally have a dig at the poorer EEC members, but
Germany is an economic powerhouse and to dismiss France or the
Scandinavian countries is pathetic ! In fact if our youth got into business
in Italy or some southern countries they might shake things up a bit (and
get a tan)......
Welfare benefits is to you what a red rag is to a bull. David Johnson
pointed out only recently how Spain is sick of scrounging Brits in its
welfare system but for you every single foreigner, be it an EEC person,
or a 3rd world country person, is in Britain just to scrounge off the
British health service. Frankly, if a large proportion of those folk are
Poles or whatever, doing shitty jobs for shitty pay, they are - in my
opinion - bloody entitled to UK hospitals, healthcare and welfare.
