Dell offer some very good deals. I received a flyer from them last week and the special offer was an excellent setup for under ?600. Unfortunately I threw it away, but their website has it - and others.

Now then, magoo,

Ignore all that bollocks above, as you know toss all about computers, I have for sale a mitac 186mghz laptop, only 12 years old!(thats good) with no back on it(for easy servicing)not that you,ll need it, 3 chips, no peas, and a FULL monochrome
screen, and non of this DVD fancy nonsense, they just slow your system down and cause you to spend less time in the pub.
It also has fly-bye night graphics, and a built in ashtray,
3 ports 2 starboards and a crows nest, oh and a floppy desk to rest it on, now I bet your glad you waited for my post eh! ALL this, including Windows 52, and comes in it,s own jiffy bag, so
you will always look the "dogs" at work and such, and the price!
?4000, but if your paying cash....?34.
It,s a real birdpuller as well if you slip it in your pocket on a Friday night.
Dont tell Marcus about this deal! he will want it first, and also he,ll get you into all kinds of trouble with nubile young ladies threatning to shag you senseless, on Primrose hill, and you dont want that do you?

A cheque will do nicely

Liz,
'Tis true, I'd love the machine, but since you offered it to Magoo first, what can I say.
As for Primrose Hill - after all the disparaging remarks re the location, I'm changing future venues to Windsor great Park where, in addition to any punishment the ladies may dish out, you stand a very good chance of being nibbled by a blue blooded bull terrier.

Thanks to everyone for the advice (except Lizard of course!).

I am not bothered about games and I doubt I would want to download full length movies but enough space to store a few dozen mpegs, avis and jpegs would do me nicely. I could transfer any pics I wanted to keep onto cd.

I would most likely while surfing the net just view most vid clips once and then bin them.

I really must try to keep up to date on the technology. I`m off to listen to my gramaphone now!

This post is so full of non-sequiturs it's funny. You arent getting a "better" computer w/ an Apple. Time & time again, U.S. consumer & computing mags survey readers, & come up w/ mediocre results for Macs. Break down, need repair.About the same level of quality as an H-P or Compaq.Very few utilities have Mac versions-go to Tucows or CNet & see how much stuff for Mac is available.& what do Microsoft's alleged monoplistic actions have to do w/ Mac & their oh-so-unlicensed-to-anyone hardware? As to service techs, there are slews of them who are crackerjack w/ PCs, & willing to work for less becaise there is more competition.& parts are much cheaper because there are several, if not many, compatible manufacturers, not one.Maybe it is a good OS, but it is still new to someone who has ben running Windows, & the objective reviewers, as opposed to Mac fanatics, dont think it is such an improvement on Windows.

Creating an index of video titles

After some pretty tedious wading through an iMac/Windows
flame war I noticed that no-one had answered magoo's
second question, which is how to create an searchable
index of your movie collection.

I have such an movie index that I made simply by building
a table in Microsoft Excel. The menu function

Data -> Filter -> Autofilter

will give you some pretty powerful search functions,
based on drop-down boxes, without having to learn a
more complex database tool....and Excel is pretty
intuitive. The one thing it would struggle to do is
allow you to search by performer, where you have
multiple performers per film.

The next best alternative is probably an Microsoft
Access database. If you create a table for films,
another for performers and a "linking" table that
connects the two, you will basically have
recreated the database structure that this site
is based on.

If you use PCs at work you should be able to sweet-talk
someone in giving you a quick tutorial in Microsoft
applications, if you are not familiar.
