Unfortunately I don't know the exact history how condom use got be so widespread in France and at what exact moment it occurred. I have heard different versions but nothing seems to ring very logical or true.

I was thinking only the other day, re SoCal- Americans really don't understand
suspender-belts [even most of the women]: so many seem to wear the stockings
just above the knee and the belt somewhere around the hips, making them look
as if they're on one of those arse-rubbing exercise things. Erotic and decorative,
it ain't.
Is there something conceptually difficult about the wearing of these garments?
Are millions of US women daily putting their tights and knickers on back-to-front,
necessitating a 'wardrobe reappraisal', thereby making them late for work and
costing the economy millions of dollars.... perhaps this is why the Chinese, who
as I understand it largely eschew such underpinnings, are now racing ahead of
the US in the profitability stakes- although I can find nothing in Friedman or
Keynes on this topic.
