The "old ugly" Skoda you refer to I assume is the Estelle. I suggest you take a look back at the rally results from throughout the 80s and you will see that in certian conditions those rear-engined estelles were almost unbeatable. The Volkswagen group, as Skoda are now part of probably havent had as much success in rallying with any other car. To the Czechs, a Skoda is no laughing matter and they tried to ban the current series of TV adverts about "Oh no, another good Skoda" etc, because they are very proud of Skoda and it has a very long history in Czechslovakia, they don't know why Brits make fun of it. There was noting wrong with them really, I think it was their cheap price tag that got them labelled as paupers cars in the UK, just like Lada, FSO, Zastava who were only doing their job providing perfectly decent Fiat copies at very cheap prices.
