Actually Mr 56, if you're interested - You might know that China is getting all hairy chested about Taiwan's push for independance. China doesn't like it at all.

I have worked in China a few times now and tried talking to the locals ( the few that could speak In-Ga-Rish ) about this. Mostly, yer average Chinese wont dare talk about ANY government policy other than to wildly agree with it. One of the doctors working with me ( who didn't seem terribley cluey about medical things, and I think was a 'Party Man' there to keep an eye on us westerners ) gave me a little lecture about how America would use Taiwan as a base to attack China if it ever went solo.

He was really strong on this and absolutely believed that the U.S. couldn't wait to have a go at China.

Being a fuckin bloody Aussie, I found the idea of attacking China ridiculous.

A Chinese attack on Taiwan would be more likely. It is Taiwan's nightmare. That's why the country is armed to the teeth. The Taiwanese are not particularly gloomy though. They have become used to the threat from overseas.

All the same, China and Taiwan are more closely linked than China's martial language would lead one to suspect. Taiwan is China's No. 1 investor. A Chinese attack on Taiwan or a Taiwanese attack on China would ruin both countries. I don't think it will happen.
