Perhaps people veer off topic if a thread is dull to start with.

A bit like in real life (remember that?) where a conversation takes twists and turns to suit the interests of the participants. Hence the thread goes on for longer because people start talking in general about anything that springs to mind to relieve themselves of the boredom induced by the original post.

I do remember some threads on interesting topics such as censorship or police/customs which stayed on topic throughout.

I personaly think this thread is all the better for veering from a daft question.
