The 'spymaster' he gives his letter of resignation to is George Markstein, the script editor of this and many other ATV dramas. A nice little injoke.

I quite agree. It's funny that it takes it so seriously whilst telling people not to take it so seriously.
Although speaking for myself, I have always taken The Prisoner seriously.
