Re: Eurovision
So we're all the same now because of globalisation. Going out for a few drinks isn't the same as actually knowing somebody, so your analysis is pretty weak.
Lol! What are you talking about, Keith? I never mentioned globalisation, nor said my experience with drinking buddies was an analysis. I was proving the point that it's all down to our personalities and experiences. It was mainly a retort to the following point from you: "I'm sorry but the Russians I have met never came over as very European to me,"
It seems that you like to give us anecdotes from your life that look like they back up your points but when I do it it's 'weak analysis'....lol!

Re: Eurovision
You don't explain why there was a political divide between East and West.
Why should I? I don't have to. Are you saying that being European makes you immune to seeing the advantages of Communism? Like I said: the Communist ideal was put together in England by two Germans. I don't see how a certain political/economical path takes you away from being labelled a European. You can be a European capitalist, communist, fascist, or liberal. Italians were still Europeans when under a fascist dictator; Cubans are still Central Americans despite living under Communist rule; Koreans are still East Asians whether you're from the despotic North or capitalistic South.
If it was just about politics then I don't remember anybody making an appeal for unity because underneath it all we were all Europeans together.
I reiterate: No one said this in England when Napoleon was going mental around Europe; No one said we should learn to live with the Nazis because they were Europeans either. I don't see why you think this is important in determining how European the Russians are.
The Czechs weren't too wild about being occupied by the Russians in 1968 were they.
Neither were the French and Dutch under Nazi control; neither were the Portuguese during the Spanish raids of the 1700s, or War of the Oranges. In fact, the Portuguese stayed allied to Britain, rather than fellow mainlanders Spain and France during the battles over the Iberian Peninsula. Again, if the Czechs were pissed off about Soviet rule, why does it conclude that this attitude is based around Russians not being European enough?

Carl Zeis, Schneider Krausner, Zorki, Lomo - always made the best optical glass. Zeis and Schneider still do and all from behind 'the iron curtain'. Praised then and praised now.
You are digging a bigger hole than the one on the Kola Peninsula, which ironically is in Russia.
