Neither Noel or Liam live in Manchester which somewhat undermines you're argument that they're provincial based on your definition. If they believed Manchester was the centre of the universe they'd live there wouldn't they ?
If you think Noel and Liam look rough maybe you should get out more.
Oasis Have Split Up

Absolutely.
But I don't have to like it : -)

Re: Oasis Have Split Up
I think what Reggie [apologies if I'm wrong] might be getting
at is some popular current of dissatisfaction at 'professional
provincials', to coin a phrase. Anne Robinson is case in point-
she constantly refers to her working-class 'Pool roots, but lives
in a mansion in Buckinghamshire. Enough, already......
The Gallaghers play the same game, albeit at a less strident level.
And their hair is truly, TRULY, terrible- and they have the dress-sense
of a drunken chimpanzee [and manners that would make a bonobo
blush].
As a London-based Geordie with a degree, doing a semi-skilled job,
I find myself pretty much falling between several available stools.
Down here, 'provincial' tends to mean 'unsophisticated'- and I take
perverse pride in that, as 'sophistication' to me is window-dressing
for morons. I have no idea if Beluga is better than Sevruga, and care
even less; it's all salty fish-balls to me- gimme cod's roe every time.
'Class' is even more numinous- but time forbids a fuller exploration
thereof at present [translation: I'm watching the football] : -)

Re: Oasis Have Split Up
I don't pay any attention or mind to Anne Robinson so I wouldn't know.
There are lots of people who are 'provincial'. Penny Lane and Eleanor Rigby are provincial or parochial right ? The Kinks, artists like Stanley Spencer were provincial. It's about the evocation of place isn't it (often mythical)?
If it's very middle class eg Inspector Morse or Cadfael it's no different to other versions of the same thing, but are you saying one is acceptable and one isn't ?

"Oasis have Split Up... Again"
should have been the header of this thread
I don't for one second reckon the split is permanent.
They've been treading water for a good few years now anyway musically, depsite Gem Archer & Andy Bell being much better musicians than Guigsy or Bonehead.....
Their time was 94-2000, love 'em or hate 'em they were pretty good if only for 2 albums

They're locking them up today, they're throwing away the key...I wonder who it be tomorrow, you or me?

Re: Oasis Have Split Up
Well I for one am glad to see the back of these ghastly, common oiks. More space and time for proper bands of fine, upstanding gentleman making decent music for decent people. Bands like Keane, Coldplay and Snow Patrol. Bands you could take home to meet your mother, as we used to say. Bands your mother probably buys.
"Let's do it..."

You mean the 'bedwetters' as Alan McGee called them ?

Yes, 'parochial' is a better term, with its implication of condescension.
When I think of 'provincial' I usually imagine, say, Lowry, who
certainly wasn't unsophisticated, stupid or talentless.

Ah, but they're firmly set in the 'counties' [translation: not 'oop North',
like 'Wycliffe', and by implication 'us' [middle-class or areas nowadays
inhabited by such], not 'them'. 'Compare 'Auf wiedersehen...'

I made no comment at all on that.

I guessed lucky, then : -)
We mustn't expect our rock idols to have coherent philosophies : -)
Three categories of people who should never be allowed to publicly
voice "political opinions":
Politicians;
The insane;
Anyone who's ever done panto at Eastbourne, or filled a 50 000-seater.
Of course, categories 1 and 2 are often the same : -))
