Jonone,
In the UK they experimented on humans by exposing the central nervous system and dropping little plastic markers on it and by this experiment they were able to determine which part of the CNS was linked to which part of the human body.

You're right, Keith.

The best analogy to give is how a computer works; the processor deals with binary only and it's the sequence of positive and negative charges (1s and 0s) that decides what you see on screen, or hear from the speakers. And it's so with the brain; your senses are just streams of data which your brain translates and creates into a reality.

People talk of virtual realities of the future but we've been living in one since before we we human. As long as the virtual reality lets us safely navigate the space our bodies occupy, and it is both not a hindrance to our survival and gives us an advantage then it will be selected for and passed on.

Hope I'm not boring anyone....lol

Reggie Perrin,
The image each eye lens projects onto the back of the retina is upside down and the illusion of 3D is created by each lens being of a different focal length. A scientist made some spectacles which turned the visual world upside down and after a while the CNS turned the reversed images the right way up but when the subjects took the spectacles off the world was now upside down.

I still believe that we see the world on a screen in the visual cortex and what we see is coloured by emotion, so to a degree all of us see the visual world different because we are part of the observation.

I rest my case.

You've seemingly missed my point again, Keith. I wasn't talking about how a brain learns, but analogising how it creates a reality from the available data ? just like a computer.

And I'm sorry to be pedantic but the basis of how neurons fire in the brain is via electrical charges, which are either positively charged, or negatively charged. This is a tumult of 'on, off' patterns, or, if you prefer, ones and zeros. The basis of digital code.

I don't know enough to argue the point, but what I do know, and what you cannot deny is that neurons transfer messages in the form of positive and negative charges, and that this is what 'digital data' means. An electrical charge is either positive or negative, so a neuron is either firing or it isn't.

And, yes, it is 'data'.
