"Frankly you guys give me much hope that the great British skill of petty
debate, moaning and cunning repartee, going back to the days of Pitt
vs Burke or Disraeli vs Gladstone is still alive and well"
Very true. Here is a recent pic. Jimbo is the one on the right. Unfortunately my pic was taken after a night out in Blackpool

D,
Quote
"Road deaths have been falling year on year since fixed speed cameras were introduced and 70 per cent of our members support them,"
re speed cameras, I can assure you that statistics in this matter are definitly being used to support their significance.
Many other factors have led to reduction in road deaths, further improved safety advances in car technology along with the installation of new tyes of crash barriers to name a couple.
I know a retired senior police chap, an assistant commisioner whom informed me that there is no correlation whatsoever between speed cameras and fines being handed out to reducing road deaths. He went so far as to say that having a traffic branch was almost pointless, but that they are necessary in in order to be 'seen' to be doing something. (Although he said that their regulating of heavy goods vehicles, collision investigation etc was of more importance.)
Other types of devices were shown to have far more impact such as the hidden warnings that flashed up your speed or similar as you approached them. Actually I tell a slight lie the 1 speed camera that does have an impact are the ones that take an average reading over several miles. The downside is they're too expesive to install everywhere, the single standalone jobs are the ones i'm referring to when saying that they are insignificant in their contribution.
Ulitmately it all also boils down to once again education and that despite the UK having one of the best driving programs for learners in Europe that this sitll amounts to it still being crap and inssufficient. ie the best turd out of the bunch.
What people should really be made to do if they want to drive is to be trained to advanced level. And this isn't about how to handbrake cars round corners, 80% is observation based training.
But of course that would mean the public would have to spend far more on learning to drive probably closer to ?1000 which lets face no-one would do because deep down no-one cares enough about road deaths to actually individually contribute to decreasing it in a personal way such as this, it's easier to say 'whats the government doing about it?' and then feel morally uplifted.
And the government goes to the Police and says what are you doing about it and the Police go erm and point to traffic branch.

Hi,
The point I was making was that it wasnt councils or the government that were taking this view in the quote used, it was the Automobile Association that supports the motorist. I realise that there is a whole range of statistics and hence views on the subject of fixed speed cameras. However I find it hard to believe that an organisation such as the Automobile Assoc. would go out of their way to dig up dodgy data that results in a defence of speed cameras.
Cheers

The obsession with installing speed cameras was based on dodgy statistics as were many Draconian measures taken during the last 13 years, including the outright persecution of the smoker.
Anyway, here's a study on dodgy stats for speed cameras.

Fair enough and I'm not suggesting they've come up with dodgy data, but ulitmately if you want to take a stance on something, somewhere there will be 'data' to support that.
But as I implied, behind the scenes people know thats its been fudged and that there are better alternatives etc. Not having a go just trying to highlight that in this instance I firmly believe and know that the AA is wrong on this one.
