Was Rawanda something everybody turned a blind eye too until someone said look what's happening here, can you just sit there & let it happen joilting Goverments into action? Very hazy on the whys & ways of Rawanda apart from knowing someone who managed to flee the country just in time.
I remember the situation in Uganda in the 70's. I think it was much the same.

Ive read some of this anmd cant be bothered with the rest.
As one who has been paid/instructed by his Govt to perpretrate violence, and on reflection from my vast old age, I can tell you it solves nothing that it was supposed to. It merely fulfills the ambitions/egos of the perpetrators/instigators.
I would personally love (dearly) love to kill all such assholes.
With special emphasis on RELIGIOUS LEADERS of whatever persuasion who advocate violence.

......there is certainly a 'blame culture', ironically first to appear in the US, where all the current ills of the developing nations are laid at the door of the West, regardless of the venality, stupidity and cruelty of more-or-less freely-elected post-colonial leaders.
Our only answer has been to to pour good money after bad, thereby fuelling the very problems we seek to ameliorate, although this happoily seems to be changing..

Re: Chelsea boy speaks
which is why i hope clare short stays in office (as do a lot of third world administrations and aid organisations, apparently). she believes in creating partnerships comprised of contributing equals, rather than perpetuating out-moded policies based upon well meaning condecension on our part. the era of the post-imperial hangover is bang over!

Re: Chelsea boy speaks
I'd be more comfortable with that idea if her much-vaunted 'conscience' wasn't so blatantly pragmatic. And protean.
Better on the inside pissing out........I suppose.

Re: Chelsea boy speaks
Personally I think the biggest problem is the Wests Multinational Companies
Making deals with these less than ethical foreign governments
Plenty of examples in Asia,Africa & even Europe are there for all to see
Where does all the money go?
Will be interesting in the future to see how East Timor fairs with their 6 Billion dollar gas deal recently signed with Australia.
Will the man on the street seea penny of it or will it become another Nigeria or Sierra Leone?
cheers
