Oops. A big ommission on my part!. How could I forget Alex Lifeson of the mighty Rush.
Also good to see someone mention Triumph. Rik Emmetts work on Blinding Light Show and Just a Game is mint.

Another good player I saw live was Zak in Ozzy Osbournes band.

Two very underrated palyers are Martin Barre of The Tull and Mike Campbell from Tom Petty's band.

Cant go for the RHCP guy, they are the most overrated band in history and the singer's voice gets right on my nerves. Sorry to be blunt but my ex neighbour used to torture me with their stuff!!

As for wost ever I rate The Edge, great writer but no way a good guitarist. The two current guys in Def Leppard are pretty shite too.

Now off to the pub.

Think you will find The Edge is responsible for 95% of the music, and Bono writes 95% of the lyrics, so where you get The Edge as a good song writer is anyones guess.
Granted The Edge isn't in the same league as most mentioned, he is better in simplicity=effectiveness IMO. His songs are very easy to play, and have more depth and emotion than most mentioned.
A DEFINATE worthy inclusion here.

However, you are correct in your post of the 2 lame Def Leppard ponces, I will give you that!!

Mick Ronson, Sonny Landreth, Lowell George, Davey Johnstone, Nils Lofgren, Zal Cleminson..............

I saw Prince on the "Lovesexy" tour - the blues guitar piece he played was stunning. The 18 minute version of "Purple Rain" circa 1985/6 is amazing.

I have been shocked by the knowledege of the people on this forum and most really know something bravo i say.
John miles is the most underated guitarist / musician of the century he can pay anything bfrom metal to country and with melody too where required.Listen to Zaragon or better still upfront the dvd live without dubs incredible.

Did not see him mentioned but Hank Marvin whilst not my personal cup of tea most of the players above say they would not have even started paying without hearing him , and when he improvises solo's never heard so much melody.

Out and our rockers all need to pay homage to eddie van halen cos without him all the shred heads such as mc calpine ,gilbert, vai and malmsteen would have doen much either.

Micheal Schenker the best exponent on how to play a solo with melody in rock ever.

At the risk of controversy most overated guitarists are

Eric clapton yes he was early an an influencer but most who copied him were better in less than two years of doing it most pros who can be arsed are better then him good songwriter though.

Jimmi page

rough as old ropes and his mom wrote the stairwasy to heaven lyrics ?(i know one of his family) very good yes guitar god NO.

Jimmi hendrix

Joe satriani maybe technically clever but left to his own devices is awful or as Gary moore says when he watched the brian may plus others concert the only thing satriani di all night any good was the solo on all right now.

who am i to judge well lets just say i have been on a few covers on the mags myself but my identity is secret !!!

What about Eddie Hazel? Purely on the strength of Maggot Brain if nothing else - and there was quite a bit else!

And Paul Kossoff (anyone mentioned him?) knew how to wring emotion out of his strings like few others.
