FYI Richard Reid is black, not white - or at least his father was black.

The funny thing is, the initial report said that passengers had "heard the boys talking Arabic". My first thought was that the average white, Northern English person wouldn't know Arabic from a slap on the arse.

Turns out, they were speaking Urdu. Which doesn't seem that weird to me (I hear it spoken daily) but clearly to dumb, frightened English people it's enough to make them crap their pants.

The sad thing is that one of the people who raised the alarm was a 12 year old girl who was apparently terrified and burst into tears. She'd have been 7 when the planes hit the twin towers, and it shows that we're bringing up English kids to be scared and xenophobic. The 90s generation seems to have outgrown that shit, what a shame to see the new generation falling for the same old racist bullshit as kids did in the 80s.

That's not so different to being a Jew who's opposed to Israel. Every religion or cult has its nutters who are despised by the majority. Nobody hates Jewish fundies more than other Jews, and nobody hates Muslim extremists more than other Muslims.

BTW - being Islamist doesn't have to mean extremist. There are Islamists of all political flavours, both left and right, extreme and moderate. Turkey's current liberal government is Islamist.

I don't think I've said anything about racial profiling, at least not in this thread.

I'm talking about the extent to which Britons have been brainwashed since 9/11.

Sure, there are also dumb Southern wankers. What I have noticed is that people in London (where I live) aren't frightened of Muslims, even though we were the ones targeted on 7/7, and even though there are a million Muslims in London. It's people from the smaller towns and suburbs who seem to be crapping themselves.

Call me racist if you like, but I don't see the English as the brightest race on the planet.

You know, that's the only thing that seems to unite all British people at the moment. We all hate Blair.

No, the problems for Asians began long before that. Asians have been the prime target of racists since I can remember: at least since the mid-70s. I first heard the phrase "paki bashing" circa 1976. And my grandfather describes similar anti-Jewish attitudes in London in the 1930s.

Britain is an island of small-minded xenophobes, and always has been.

SB

I said current problems.

The problems of people being taken off planes for fear of them being terriorists.

Prior to the attacks in London if an Asian with a backpack stood next to me on the tube I wouldn't have even noticed.

I suspect that prior to the plot to blow planes came to light, although I may be wrong, that Asian passengers were never removed from aircraft or viewed differently from any other passenger just because they were Asian.

Fair enough - we just have different ideas of what "current problems" means. I think that the current association with terrorism is just the latest chapter in a story that has been going on for ~35 years. "Paki bashing" has moved from the skinheads to the mainstream, that's all.

I'll give you an example: before 9/11, the BNP's racist propaganda was primarily targeted at "Asians". Within a few days of 9/11, they replaced the word "Asians" with the word "Muslims". Same message, same propaganda, just a new victim.

British Asians are used to being victimised. For them, this situation isn't new, just worse than it was before.

"During the 1970s Asians were increasingly the victims of racism - from, racist gangs, the local press, the police and even the council. The community began to organize. These took different forms - the Independent Asian Alliance stood as candidates in the council election in 1982 and 1986, and did reasonably well in Green Street wards; in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the youth turned to anti-racist organizations such as the Newham Youth Movement and the Newham Monitoring Project, which were again the strongest in the Green Street area, while older Asians campaigned on such issues as the need for a Muslim burial ground and Muslim and Hindu community centers. In 1984 Green Street was the location of one famous incident, that of the Newham Seven who were Asian youths charged with conspiracy by the police after a confrontation with white racist which began outside the Duke of Edinburgh pub in Green Street, then a well known haunt of racist gangs."

I think we do SB sorry.

I hate the phrase "paki bashing" but I fear that while people within the 'paki' community give reason for the 'bashing' to take place there will be those who will use it.

Nort West Euro MP Sajjad Karim has recently done an article asking the question does my skin colour mean I'm gulity until proven innocent.

The obvious answer is NO but what I would like to see is people like Sajjad Karim using his media resources to say to his community that when these types of actions are taken it is our community that suffers.

Apart from 1 very brave young lady on This Week (who I think was the 1st British Asian Miss UK) all I've ever seen is excuses from the likes of the Muslim Council saying it's not all Muslims.

If the mainstream saw action being taken as much as they see defence they would probably be less inclined to be as suspicious.

We will have to agree to disagree but for me the people best placed to deal with the current problems is the Asian community.
