As for the prisons, I was trying to say that a UK prison would be less of a deterrent to an asylum seeker from 'war torn Somalia' or the daily beating and and public executions of 'Afghanistan', than a UK citizen.

I wasn't at all implying that asylum seekers just can't help committing crimes! Some people are murderers and some aren't, no matter where you come from, but I do think your background would have an affect on what you think about UK prisons.

I agree with what you've said about Mr Dibble at times. He does bring class into every argument whenever possible, and he can be quick to assume a persons class based on their views, but you're falling into the same trap by assuming anyone against continuous immigration must be some sort of xenophobe.

Just like most immigrants can be good for the country and law abiding, so can some people against mass immigration be broad minded, friendly, respectful and kind toward other cultures.

This is not quite true. There are ten or so people who will never be set free again. The best known criminal serving a lifelong sentence is Mohammed Bouyari, the murderer of Theo van Gogh.

I agree! They're doing it here no doubt! The mexicans come here in droves for a better life only to get hired on some lower than minimum wage job or at "bare minimum" like you said and what's happening is those at higher wages get layed off or they don't hire those who really need a job, older workers and blacks and as much crime as blacks commit WE NEED THOSE JOBS just like anybody else. How much you wanna bet the crime rate goes down?

You make a good point. I'm not against anybody coming here (U.S.) for a better life, but treat EVERYBODY the same, pay'em the same.

I never made a study of the Dutch penitentiary system, but as far as I know the way a prisoner is treated depends on the way he behaves and the authorities' idea of how dangerous he is. Normally he may receive a visitor once a week. The governor of the prison may grant him the right to receive one visitor a month without a warder being present. There is a special ?peeskamertje? (fuck room) for these ends.

The prisoner may rent a tv. He may write and receive letters. He may use the telephone once a week. A few years ago there was a sad case of a prisoner who phoned his ex-wife every week to tell her he would finish her off when he would be released. Several times she complained to the authorities. No one bothered to intervene. A few days before he was released she asked for police protection. It was refused. So within a week after his release he actually bumped her off. No one was prosecuted for complicity in murder?
