Zevon, you're supposing that the band endorsed and were actively involved with the fan club. Also does any community of interests inevitably lead to conformity and group think ? If you go to a football match and you're one of an attendance of .. let's say 50,000 the commonality is that you support the same team, but what else ? There is sufficient diversity in a crowd of that size to counteract a groupthink tendency, and also where is the coercive pressure to conform ? What are the sanctions or punishments for non-conformity ? You don't need anyone's permission to support the team, just like you don't need anyone's permission to like the Damned and to wish to join a fan club. You're supposing a kind of herding motivation in joining a fan club that may not be at all relevant to this individual. What about other motivations for joining a fan club? Exclusive releases, priority for tickets etc etc
