Goodfellas: a humble post

I first watched it when it was on TV a few years after it came out, after the initial hype had died down, and before the 'best film ever' quotes.

I thought it was fantastic, and by the time I got to the wedding scene I knew it was something special. A few months later, I saw a copy in HMV for ?4, so I bought it, and watched it again, to see if it was as good as I remember, or if I was a little drunk when I watched it - that why I liked Duece Bigelow!

I watched it again and thought t was OK, but not up to my initial viewing, and it wasn't until the next day, when I watched it with her that I started noticing the little things in it that make it so good. I have watched it every few months since then, and I never get bored of it.

Unfortunately, every other film since has copied something from it, but nothing has matched it for the complete package.

Casino is a forgotten classic as well, but I though Taxi Driver was a pile of shit (although It may be better if I watch it again - I hated The Matrix and Gladiator first time I watched them, but now love them).

Although my favourite is L.A. Confidential - if you've never seen it, you can pick it up for less than a fiver most places - do yourself a favour and watch it at least once.

Well given that this thread has generated 40 responses tells me something. For better or worse for a 10 year old movie it warrants talking about. I personally think it is one of Scorseses finest moments alongside Raging Bull and Taxi Driver. Casino was just Good Fellas with more money in it. I still loved it nonetheless.

If I remember right reading Premier magazine as I did religiously a lot back then, Scorsese very nearly didnt want to make it for the obvious comparisons to Good Fellas but likened the movie to a modern take on the Western which made it all the more appealing to him.

As for DeNiro playing a jew? Why not? He's an actor and did it very well. as we've come to expect from him. He convinced me he was a jew. Then again Ben Kingsley played Gandhi very well. Need I go on?

What about Americans playing Romans? What about? What about? What about?
