I only wish it were a nightmare, but it still exists today.
We like to point the finger at America and claim to be so superior, but much of the wealth of the British Isles was founded upon the slave trade, directly or indirectly.

Since Jefferson and Washington kept slaves, I doubt it.

Clive James has that look because he's still not mastered the autocue.

Let us remember that our ancestors have all be enslavers, and slaves at one time or another. To be a slave in ancient Greece, for example, was welcomed as it meant a roof and food. You were either a citizen, a farmer, a slave to the two, or a beggar/vandal. Beggars and vandals had very short lives.
I guess from those beginnings, and it being so widespread, that that was the reason it was so acceptable. The enslavers could easily fool themselves into thinking that slavery was a way out of starvation? A person had to look after their slaves because death to your slaves meant your crops that year may not be reaped fast enough, and thus you may starve.
The difference with Africa was that there were so many slaves which were purchased so cheaply that they became expendable. Slavery was already accepted over the whole world. It also made it easier seeing as 400 years ago, they knew nothing of genetics, or biology, and didn't even recognise Negroid people as human.

As was ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, The Persians, Egyptians & Vikings; the French, Dutch, Spanish & Portuguese all used slavery to get where they are today.
I don't think you could find many nations today that never used slavery at one time or another.
It's something humankind as a whole has had to go through -and still is- to get to where we are I'm afraid.
