If the border is so easy to cross without any security, why do airline passengers in transit via the USA get the whole treatment?

So concened with the content of your posts Bimmercat that I had ignored your heading.

In the Cold War era I travelled by train from Germany to Czechoslovakia. The Iron Curtain was actually an iron fence with barbed wire on top and watchtowers at regular intervals. A German co-passenger told me the fence was charged and there were minefields too. I don't know if this was true, but it was certainly true for the border between the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic.
Somehow I feel this isn't the way the Mexican-American border ought to be, but I understand you would feel safer when there would be a little more control.
In the European Union the internal borders have all but disappeared. I don't need a passport when I visit Belgium or Germany. There is control at the external borders, but still quite a few illegal immigrants manage to sneak in. Many of them land on the shores of Spain, Italy and Greece at night, in ramshackle boats. There is also a brisk traffic in drugs, cigarettes and firearms.
But I doubt if many terrorists sneak in. A terrorist must know how to reach his goal without being conspicuous. The guys who wrecked the WTC had lived in the US for some time and even taken flying lessons there.
What about the Muslims living in the EU? Most of them are peace-loving citizens, but some of them are ardent fans of Osama Bin Laden and think they have reasons to hate us. They speak our languages and know the way in our countries. They are the potential terrorists.
There already is a culture gap between you and some other posters here. But the culture gap between us and many of our Muslim co-citizens is immense. I realized this yesterday evening, when the Dutch radio broadcasted a debate between a Muslim boy and two Muslim girls about the question whether a faithful Muslim woman should wear a headscarf. Surely these people would not dream about an assault on a public building, but even they are living in a different world. A world the terrorists feel at home in.
