Lol....

I don't think contraception even entered Bono's head when meeting the Pope. He was just thinking of the photo opportunity. And if anybody thinks they're going to get a whole continent to live in abstinence then they're mental. Who'd believe they could do that exactly? Someone that believes in ghosts, gods and hellfire probably............oh........it's all coming together now!

Come on Wazza. The Pope wasn't thinking of development in Africa, he was condemning contraception because it fit with Catholicism!

Contraception will save lives, end of. Obviously it isn't the answer to all of Arica's problems. I just think Bono could have got even more media attention -and thus raising awareness- by slagging off the Pope and his stupid advice to Africans.

BONO CALLS POPE A WANKER! would have been such a great headline, and awareness campaign!

How about, BONO NUTS POPE! Damn, I'd have even purchased The Sun with a headline like that. !laugh!
If you could kindly hunt down the no doubt massive amounts of evidence of Sinead's subsequent positive effect on African development and the crushing of the then Pope's resistance to contraception due to her outburst on Saturday Night Live, I would be most obliged!
Sadly, that would be impossible. Since Bono didn't do the moral thing we may never know how many Africans are dying because of those words, just like we cannot say how many lives were saved by Bono having photo opportunites with Popes.

I just know what was morally right.

He comes across as being sanctimonious, no one wants a mega rich rock star lecturing us to "Focking give us ya money", while he lives the high life in Cannes as a tax exile and I'm not so sure that he has "Sensitive eyes". That's maybe his publicist trying to "De-twatify" his image.

To be fair, Sinead was pretty much a one hit wonder, and more people would take notice of Bono having a go at the Pope.

Also such an outburst would reach more people with mass internet access; something which in Sinead's day, didn't exist.

I guess we differ in opinion. You think the softly approach may be better, while I want the Pope to keep his fat mouth shut, and stop interfering with things he knows nothing about.

My original issue was indeed about the carbon footprint.

But when I read that he's paid $1700 to fly his hat round the world, I still think that that's a twattish, hypocritical thing to do.

Why? Simply because it flies in the face of his preaching and pontification about global warming, the basic contention of which boils down to "the emissions from aircraft are slowly destroying the planet - but they're still pretty handy for transporting my headgear around".

Yes it is his hat and his cash, but don't you think it sets a bad example and sends out totally the wrong kind of signal? Quite apart from being a crass example of the obscene excesses that come with extreme wealth - Elton John spending X hundred grand a year on fresh flowers being another good example.
