Hartlepool Town football club's mascot is a monkey called Hangus (also now the mayor due to some tactical voting by the Monster Raving Gibbon Party). The name refers to a tale of the good people of Hartlepool, during the napoleonic wars, being scared shitless of a French invasion. A ship was wrecked off the coast, and the only survivor was a monkey which, in their ignorance of what a Frenchman looked like, the good folk of the town took to be Johnny Foreigner and promptly strung it up.

It would be a wrench for our own Monkey to be treated in such a way, but I feel I could cope with the loss.
