voting is compulsory is Australia?

Whats the punishment for not voting?

Over here in the UK, typical turnouts are 50% of the electorate, or less.

The last time I renegged on voting 1990 I just said I was sick(9/10 people are sick after a 21 day Contiki tour of Europe-Continental breakfasts have a lot to answer for) and they waived the AUS20-00 dollar fine

No idea how much it is today but its hardly a deterrent to not voting

Turnout in non-compulsory elections seems to be about 50 percent although in our Council(your Boroughs I believe) Elections they get about 30 percent or less which says we are an apathetic bunch

The downside of non-compulsory voting is that all the Politicians then start persistently cold calling via the phone to get your vote using the US of A as an example

By the title of the discussion I have heard all the comments some of them well informed and some with a seeming head in the sand attitude, ie officer dibble (I class this as the latter):
>

like young teenage girls have never in the last 30 years or so ?went out? to get pregnant to either be looked after by the father, their family or the state??? wtf that is news to me Dibble.

And the threads headline:
>
I dont exactly see too much sympathy let alone help for this problem that extists in every town and every city.

Unfortunately as I see it, if you have a mother and (or) father who are or were dependant on drugs, methodone etc, what chance have the children got of being brought up to have any morale values and expectations, that is something that we all seem to fail to mention (as we only had the hardships of lack of heating, clothes, food etc.,) how many people can escape that sort of upbringing, not many ? if any I would imagine, but this thread just serves to highlight how spoilt, and lucky some of us have seemingly become.

Thanks crofter, a humane response to the rabble-rousing rants of some of the other posters.
I don't know about living next to chavs but I don't think I would enjoy having some forumites as neighbours.

Oh, cobblers crofter. If anyone has their head in the sand it's your good self. Again you've presented us with a negative unhelpful post. I'd counter any clear and concise opposing points you had to make, but you haven't made any, apart from your seeming assertion that the whole Chav problem is, in fact, a drug problem. Also, you're letting the Chavs off the hook by throwing them the 'bad luck' defence - the implication being that they?re as functional as anyone else, but have simply suffered a ?reversal of fortune? and all they really need is 'a handout' and a sympathetic hand on the shoulder. If this suggestion was taken on board by the powers that be it would simply amplify the state?s inertia in dealing with the Chav problem, and any decent citizens who are now suffering ?Chav fallout? would just have to put up with the status quo.

I was born in as humble a surrounding as you could imagine ? an inner city industrial slum that was so crap that is was ?cleared? a few years after I was born. We even had drugs ? tobacco and alcohol were rife, despite the paltry ?8.00 a week average wage. But as my awareness of my surroundings and position in society grew I began to realise that it was crap, not the life for me, and I resolved to get myself out. Lady Luck had nothing to do with it; I wasn?t going to hang around waiting for her to come calling.

Is it true you didn't even have the luxury of a cardboard box to live in?
But you went into the porn business, ripped off the punters and the rest is history.

Oh, come on mart. I was prepared to take you seriously as an intelligent chap who happened to hold an opposing view. But your ?ripping off punters? allegation is totally irrational, idiotic, without foundation and out of order. If that were the case, how come we are still in business after 10 years, serving the same customers, many of who place regular and substantial orders with us?

This is a clear case of someone wanting to take the ball home with them because the game isn't going their way. I never cease to be fascinated by aspects of human behaviour.

OK then Dibble, front up. What is your outfit?
You are very coy about that.
