Weren't the official figures for the UK population around 62-64 million? I've seen estimates of around a million illegal immigrants -which is always a conservative estimate as not to cause uproar- so a sensible guess would be around 66 million.

Governments will always be conservative with illegal immigrant figures, while parties like the BNP will always exaggerate these figures for their own means.

1-2 million is the middle ground, so I'd go with that personally.

I agree with crofter.

We are way too over populated now without these 'mickey mouse' countries coming in to the EU. We are half the size of France but have the same population. How come. Spain has a population of 38m - 10m less than just England but is also twice as big as the UK. Maybe we should take a leaf out of their books.

You got a point there! As a so-called citizen of the states we're having our own probems with immigration, mainly the mexicans coming in droves but not limited to others from overseas. We got mexicans taking jobs (more like EMPLOYERS GIVING them jobs) that blacks used to do. Asian and Eastern Indians working in the hospitals. Eastern Europens working construction jobs. The unions won't let blacks in to work with them so we stand and watch others work in OUR communities. Canada seems nice right about now!

As far as work? I don't know. I think Canada had an election either last year or even before last year and I believe they elected someone who was anti war. Don't etch it in stone though, I could be wrong. As far as disagreements we haven't heard much from Canada since they pulled some troops out.
