Yes as stated elsewhere in this thread, they were the ones, 1st Brit band after the Beatles & VERY big for a while. I can recall looking at the teen mags' covers & thinking, '5 against 4 isnt fair!'

What was the movie w/ Badfinger (whom I always liked) where they did
'If you want it'?? Wasn't that pretty awful too??...Oh, was it 'Magic Christian'??

& I read that someone is doing a re-make of 'Barbarella'!! Other than Jane Fonda in very little, that movie had no redeeming features atall.....

I liked that song by Badfinger "If You Want It". I didn't know there was a movie to it though. You know I thought the Beatles were ok but not the best band in the world.

I do have to agree with Jacques

Hi Guilbert,
Jacques has a point you know. I remember when Sergeant Pepper's first came out, housewifes down our street were singing along to a Day in the Life - "4000 holes in Blackburn, Lancashire", "I'd love to turn you on" and "He blew his mind out in a car". This particularly happened at bathtime, as I recall. Mind you, they struggled to replicate the bit at the end when the orchestra went from its lowest note to its highest.

And as for Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, I remember singing it at our school choir, "Cellophane flowers of yellow and green, Towering over your head. Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes, And she's gone." Great, poppy tunes methinks, too.

I do think that the Rolling Stones were much more imaginative. Those who argue that they were a blues band that ripped off Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters etc etc. are totally wrong. And the people who say that the Satanic Majesties Request album was a pathetic attempt by the Stones to make their own Sergeant Pepper's are talking absolute nonesense.

As for these modern groups such as the Kaiser Chiefs, the Magic Numbers, Razorlight and Stereophonics who seem to be in awe of a group that recorded on four track 40 years ago, come on guys, pull yourselves together!!! And as for that Beatles tribute band, Oasis, come on guys, what's wrong with a few Frank Sinatra tracks if you are in that housewives favourites mode.

Anyway Guilbert, I have got some other great ideas to discuss whilst we are on the topic of debunking heroes:
Michael Jackson - that guy can't dance for nuts. He's so ungainly, he's like a white guy.
Vincent van Gogh - those sunflowers look nowt like the real thing. I know, I've seen them down B&Q.
And finally, Mardadona, he wouldnt have got on the bench for my pub team.

Have a nice day
David

You can see recordings of the Pepper songs by Tavis, Sterophonics here:

Or if you have digital TV you can press the "Red button" and one of the options is Beatles songs (or "Pepper songs" cant remember)

You can then watch 7 of the artists do the "covers"

Have to say they stick very closely to the originals.
