That's the understatement of the century! Brown and his allies had been plotting to get rid of Blair for years. I don't think there has ever been such a disloyal colleague as Gordon Brown.

Legally yes, but there was no compelling reason for Blair to step down when he did, apart from the intense pressure from Brown. It wasn't the cash for honours enquiry which did it, that went nowhere in the end. Anyway, Gordon wanted the job, now he's got it, and much good may it do him.
