Howard, she did win 3 elections but people were largely voting against the opposition. This is evident from the appallingly low mid-term pollings she used to get. To say the Labour party was in disarray doesn't come close. The manifesto written by Michael Foot, the Labour leader in 1983, for his party's election campaign, was described by one prominent person as "the longest suicide note in history". In 1987 Thatcher tricked the public into voting for her, she broke every manifesto pledge within a few months, and the Murdoch press helped her too. I was a Thatcher supporter, even though I was not quite old enough to vote for her, but I have mixed views now. If the Labour party hadn't destroyed itself in 1979, and the whole ethos of socialism seen as such an outdated thing of the past, then she would not have been in office as long as she was. The Labour party was never very good at winning elections anyway - until the Tony Blair period the party had never been in office for more than one term at a time and would regularly be in opposition for 2 or 3 terms at once.
