I agree with some of the things you say SB, but my real-world experiences 'do' chime with the content of my posts. I'm not talking about a few Muslim friends either. I'm talking about living smck bang in the middle of a Muslim community. I've been educated with Muslims, eaten at their tables, lived within their culture. Learnt that Pakistanis look down upon Bengalis, while despising Indians, while Arabs look down their noses at Pakistanis, Iraqis, Iranians, the whole lot. Yes, Arabs do indeed sit at the top of the 'social tree'. I've seen Asian hate of 'Black' African Muslims, their hate of Jews.(I've never come across much hate for Christianity it must be said, but they do see themselves as superior in every way.) Yes SB, Muslims too have racist bigots among them, and would even be bold enough to say that Muslims -as a whole- have a bigger percentage of racists than any other culture. (that I have come across, though Mexican/Spanish hate of Blacks in LA takes some beating).

I even have long time Muslim friends, who hate British immigration laws, and think they should be tightened up conciderably. They say the newer Muslim immigrants are spoiling it for everyone.

Now, as you insinuated that I was dishing out sweeping generalizations, I'll quote you:
Muslims are being attacked by racist white thugs, not the other way round.
If thats not 'two' sweeping generalizations in one sentence, then I don't know what is. You've just generalized all Muslims as peaceful, and all whites as thugs!.........Well I never!

Being part Dane, I tried in a recent post to draw attention to another of SB's sweeping and inaccurate generalization about Denmark and despite the fact that it is very general knowledge that Denmark stood alone in sticking there necks out at huge risks to themselves, to help almost all of the 8000 Jewish people to escape the Nazis, and providing a link to correct his poor grasp of this fact, never received further comment!

Here is the quote from SB:

Sorry if this is off of the existing topic, but thought it relevant to the generalization part of this one.

Some of my relatives did flee Denmark, and I still have some elderly relatives in Copenhagen.

It was very true that the Danish *government* helped the Jewish population flee to Britain and Ireland, so it was better than the governments in Holland, France etc.

But it was the Danish *people* as well as the Nazis that the Danish Jews fled from. As in Holland, the Nazis would have relied on the local population to round up the Jews for them.

The Danes have a shown their "Aryan" colours in their recent attacks on Muslims, and only today Danes have been "warned" not to visit Islamic countries. Denmark is a xenophobic place (as a good Danish friend of mine living in London is happy to tell me).

Another 2 sweeping generalizations, you're on a roll SB.

Blimey - even referring to a national characteristic is a generalisation? Watch out Sam, you're getting very PC.

"I don't need a background in business or living with families in Europe to know that their culture isn't very different from culture in the UK. Having a pretty wide European background and having been born and grown up in the UK gives me a pretty good view of more than one culture in Europe and people aren't all that different really. You've probably experienced culture-shock because you're not very open to new situations and people, tend to see it all as valid or invalid, not so I'm afraid."

"Culture shock"; "not very open to new situations and people"; "tend to see it all as valid or invalid"???

You make some pretty crass assumptions. I've spent over 40 years visiting, working and living in Europe. I had over 30 years making an excellent living out of undestanding the cultural differences between peoples and providing means of communication to narrow those differences around the world, working for governments, NGOs and business.

As I managed to retire on the proceeds of a very successful business when I was 51, which was based on my ability to absorb, understand and disseminate ideas and information and attract people to contribute to discussion and debate about differences and similarities in social, work and academic cultures your comments look pretty stupid.

Since retirement I have lived outside the UK and face cultural differences every day.

Oh, BTW, I worked in Warsaw Pact countries from time to time between 1973 and 1990 and, since the break up, have had dealings with senior personnel who were in the armed forces or in the civil service in Russia and Eastern Bloc countries. Funny how many talk of the Warsaw Pact both in private and from platforms at conferences I've organised.

More Muslim women are wearing veils now than ever before. This phenomenom is indicative of the radicalisation of these women and is a protest against this government's policies in Iraq and the "war on terror."

There is no requirement in the Koran for a Muslim women to be veiled and it shows their alienation from the British way of life. If they want to be veiled then I suggest that they emigrate to an Islamic country where all women are forced to wear the veil by the religious police.

Come on Mike, where's your tolerance?

I don't mind the burqas. I just want them to accept that in some circumstances they have to be removed. However they think they can get on a bus showing their monthly pass -that has a photo ID- without showing the driver their face is stupidity.

I agree that they should repect our customs & way of life though.
