it 1st started in 66 with fred dineage,bunty?james a sort of muriel young lookalike that worked for granada as a continuity announcer in the early 60s remember ollie/fred?wally whyton,carol vorderman took over in the 90s with HOW 2.

blue peter seemed a bit snobby val singleton i spose magpie seemed more down to earth to me,1 of the presenters mick robertson lived near me for a while in 74.

Jack Hargrieves was my favorite, saw him once down in Dorset...looked no diffrent from the TV, had his fishing hat on & tweed jacket...real country sports type. Liked Fred Dineage too....he had a sence of humour & I always thought he did it all just for a laugh.

fred did the sports show on ITV,jack presented OUT OF TOWN from southern that was always on sunday afternoons b4 police 5 with SURE TAYLOR,[IM NO COPPERS NARK]

But the thing is steve Magpie was almost a straight copy of Blue Peter. ITV saw how poular Blue Peter was & thought "We must have a show like that"

i know it started yrs b4 i watched it,pete brady/tony bastable presented it 1st,i only started watching 75/76,their was a good kids serial on about then called golden hill or something about a youth club with bovver boys ,billy hamon was in it he fancied this girl but her father didnt like him it was full of great characters very underated better than some of the rubbish we get now,these people could act too,billy was also in a sweeney episode with warren mitchell.
