We get the same old mantra from both sides. The "piss off Jocks, we're better off without you," and the "fuck you, ya soft southern shites, we're able to manage our own affairs."

For argument's sake, Scotland goes independent. Various treaties and trade agreements needed to keep business going as normal; even assuming we gain access to oil revenues, cuts in social services, health and education, transport etc needed in the first few years until we can build a proper infrastructure; huge amounts of the "unemployable" in former industrial towns and cities (Glasgow, Dundee, Lanark, Paisley, parts of Edinburgh etc) will be told they are a luxury we can no longer afford; and I truly believe that many of our brightest young people will still head south.

The SNP were successful in May because they spent the previous year answering every question with, "Of course, we'll be in power after the next election . . ." until people believed them. The latest trick is the constant reference to "the Scottish government" or even just "the government;" this will prepare folk to accept that Salmond and friends are actually running everything, not just those areas devolved to Holyrood.

As time goes on in a Scottish republic, resentment grows about favoured areas (under wee Jack's regime, a lot of civil service jobs headed west). Edinburgh would become the new London, to be hated by those who don't live or work there. People tend to forget there is more to this country than the two cities at either end of the Forth-Clyde canal.
