Free newsgroup servers via BT Broadband access?

Hi,

does anybody know of any newsgroup servers that can be used via BT Broadband access? If not for free, then what are the cheapest alternatives possible? E.g. I switched over to BT's Premium Mail service for emails, too, for only ?1.50/month.

According to their techies, Freeserve's and CompuServe's servers can't be accessed except only through their own, respective Broadband services and/or dial-up.

Any thanks again would be much appreciated from this novice. :)

not a news server.....but i have had much joy using Emule and Imesh for those files.

I use them quite a lot on my bt connection and had great success in getting downloads.

And it costs nothing as well.

Clara offer a number of reasonably priced options and, although they've had a few problems recently , I've generally found them to be good.

Alternatively have you tried to see if you can access BT's own news-servers since, AIUI, BTBroadband and BTOpenworld share some IP addresses. This means some of us on BTBroadband can access the news-server if our IP falls within the right range. Not that I ever do since the dropped posts were as bad as ever last time I looked.

I haven't tried that yet. Could you give me a URL to look up the info on how to do that?

If you mean connect to BT's own news-server then simply type 'news.btinternet.com' into the server properties box of your news-reader and see if it lets you connect and download a list of groups.

If you are going to really want to collect files from usenet then a paid for service is the only reliable way to go. A quick connection to the Britbabes group shows only 33 of 60 pics of Claudia Cassali have been picked up. If you are interested in multimedia files then this kind of service is useless. Also, please note, repost requests because you have a bad news-service are not welcome by most.

The following will help if you are new to usenet
