Reference to previous discussion here of this 'subject' suggests that the 'issue' of Steve's 'gayness' was seemingly based solely on a solo wank-job boxcover illustration. Loads of straight actors have done this sort of thing before, and good luck to them.
AFAIC, it's a non-issue. Unsubstantiated rumour, as you say.

I think that's Steve in what you could call a "compromising position" with the boy band singer on the front cover.
