I just wanted to know what the going rate is at the moment for a cameraman, amateur or experienced.

I don't want to get ripped of.

If you want the best expect to pay between ?250 to ?300 a day.
If you want - well you know what I mean. Anything below that.

I don't charge the amatuers that much Dave usually a few quid and a beer,
Seriously tho its better to pay a couple of hunderd quid and get a film in focus and shot on a decent camera (Professional not palm-corder you can tell coz it does not have auto focus and the camera-man operates it not holds it). Dave will explain,
