Just obtained this gem, but I think the database is wrong, my copy has the car reg as a M reg and not a W reg. You only catch a glimpse, but I think its a Morris Marina
Filmed in London in Trafalger Square to begin, it is indeed an excellent loop

You could be right, but I just looked at the cap I took with a magnifying glass, and I still tend towards the W, but it's very difficult to tell for certain.

Anyway, does anyone know what years a W or an M correspond to when the letter is at the end - letter, letter, letter, number number, number, letter? iirc a W is early 80s, M about 75.

Gives the lowdown:
The M reg would therefore be:
August 73 to July 74
Year Suffix - M

The registration year letters are applicable to cars registered within Great Britain, (England, Scotland, and Wales). Northern Ireland use their own system for vehicle registrations.

To avoid confusion with the characters 1, 0, V and 2, year letters I, O, Q, U and Z were not used.

Up to 1998 a new vehicle year starts on the 1st August and ends on the 31st July the following year.

Note: Prefix Q was not used as a year letter, but indicates Query. Normally this indicates the car is either a kit car, has been previously total lossed (an insurance write off) or its original year of manufacture is unknown. Q-plates are of the format: Q 123 ABC.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Up to July 83 the year letter was the last letter of the number plate, example: ABC 123 Y)

Note: Suffix Z was not used.

August 82 to July 83
Year Suffix - Y

August 81 to July 82
Year Suffix - X

August 80 to July 81
Year Suffix - W

August 79 to July 80
Year Suffix - V

Note: Suffix U was not used.

August 78 to July 79
Year Suffix - T

August 77 to July 78
Year Suffix - S

August 76 to July 77
Year Suffix - R

Note: Suffix Q was not used.

August 75 to July 76
Year Suffix - P

Note: Suffix O was not used.

August 74 to July 75
Year Suffix - N

August 73 to July 74
Year Suffix - M

August 72 to July 73
Year Suffix - L

August 71 to July 72
Year Suffix - K

August 70 to July 71
Year Suffix - J

August 69 to July 70
Year Suffix - H

August 68 to July 69
Year Suffix - G

August 67 to July 68
Year Suffix - F

January 67 to July 67
Year Suffix - E

January 66 to December 66
Year Suffix - D

January 65 to December 65
Year Suffix - C

January 64 to December 64
Year Suffix - B

January 63 to December 63
Year Suffix - A

Vehicles registered prior to August 62 did not use a year letter.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(From August 83 onwards the year letter was the first letter of the number plate, example: A 123 ABC)

(From March 99 the year letter changed twice per year, in March and September)

Note: Prefix Z was not used.

Thanks a lot. I still think it looks like a W on the screen, but the date makes an M more likely given when these loops were probably shot.

Alec, you must have a dodgy/grainy copy. Joe is quite correct with the registration and my copy is crystal clear.
I could impress you with another observation that the radiators in the house are British, but I won't.
Judging by the brunettes 'Farrah Flick' hairstyle, I would suggest it is 1976-77 and not 1980 as the database suggests

If I were able to see the cap I would be able to identify for you. I am somewhat of a British Leyland enthusiast and by looking at the car I could tell you. If it is indeed a W reg, then it would be the last model of Marina with a full width chrome grille with 2 oblong spotlights in the grille. If it is an M then it will be an older Marina with left and right grilles and the front panel coming down the middle dividing the two grilles and only one light at each side. M reg would have completely chrome bumbers, W reg would have chrome and black plastic bumpers.

But remember that even if it was 1980, there would be a hell of a lot of M reg Marinas still going round. W reg was the last reg of the Marinas before it was replaced by the ITAL which was basically a Marina but will all the chrome parts replaced with black parts. The bumpers are completely black on an Ital and they have big oblong headlights and the black-and-blue plastic Austin-Rover logo on the grille whereas the Marina had a chrome British Leyland logo with the word Morris next to it.
