Porn makers days numbered?Surely so?I see QXL over 18s auctions have people selling snide dvds for a quid each with no restriction.Choose from 300 ???Many famous titles are getting ripped .The genuine ones are ?15 to ?25.Also e bay has a new policy..instead of restricting snide sellers it washes its hands saying in effect 'it's up to the buyers to make sure what they buy is Ok'.People are openly selling snide stuff eg Office DVDs,Gervaise,Peter Kay etc etc.At the supermarket checkout yesterday was a magazine How to copy your favourite DVDs !!DVD copiers are getting cheaper every month and in five years will be less than ?100..Ben,Marino etc your views please....

Excuse me.
DVD copiers are already well below ?50 if you buy from the right place. On eBay you can pick up a Pioneer DVR-106 for about 20 quid most days.

Okay I am just back from the pub so excuse me please, but all I can say for the snides and pirate copies is, we cant stop them, however we hope there are enough true fans of our products to buy from legit souces.
Of course if the odd copy comes up, why should we say no.
But we are not warner brothers, and we are not able to sell in may outlets so our market is smal.
What really upsets me, is people like myself , and one eyed jack, who are some of the newer generation of producers have never had a decent run of sales before getting pirated, it is one thing having a great brand name like Ben Dover, after so many years you expect some pirating, but when someone is selling your films before you can afford to get them certificated and out yourself. It is a little bit disheartening.

I know we all like to get a great deal, but it makes me a little mad when we have not even had a chance to get our movies out legally and someone is making money out of us.

However this is the age we live in, and for myself and some of the other producers here, we live in hope that if we do the right thing, it will pay off.

I am not saying I live in poverty, I have a wonderful life, but fuck me, It would sure be lovely to have a small run of good fortune like some of the big guys.
But the lager and bacardi in me, says fuck em, so long as I get laid, and have a roof over me head. Who cares.

If it signals the end of anything it will be the end of the DVD as we know it
if piracy hits levels like the music industry suffered from

Streaming DRM Videos via a website is its likely replacement

Of course we can thank our cheap skate pirate friends on P2Ps & Auction sites for this

cheers

Porn makers days numbered!? I doubt it. If they really over do it, it might seriously set the business back. As it is, anyone getting into the business now is going to find it more difficult making a living out of this game because they have to produce in volume and probably won't see much of a return until voilume 6 is out the door so to speak...So all you one and two scene producers will have to think about bringing out 30 plus scenes before thinking about being new players.

I can't see it happening for a long while yet but if pirates really over do it, they could fuck themselves out of the business too if less new material comes out on the market but like I said, I can't realistically see that happening.

The scariest thing now is that due to technology being so cheap and available, pirates are selling at the lowest price I have heard of in years. ?5 a dvd! In fact, they have to sell a lot more to break even these days compared to the days of selling "hooky" gear.

In some strange way, pirates helped to elevate my name in the early years when I was just an anonymous bloke in North London who made videos. It was Jason Reece who told me to brand name my stuff because his customers liked my stuff over his that they had no reference to it.

I think thats the key also to have a brand name, otherwise, your product with the pirates will truly be lost at sea. As it is, not much can be done about the pirates.

It would be great if we could set up our own company like FACT with a bunch of real big, ugly fucking bruisers with scars and skin heads straight out of prison who can handle this for us by going around taking the money out of the pirates pockets then clearing their houses out and distributing the spoils amongst us producers then we can sit back and laugh then say: "See, how does that feel. Not nice is it?"

Interestingly, given that America is a bigger market, you never hear them going on about pirates. This is probably because they are backed by the FBI and therefore it is a federal offence. It seems strange that we have to pay nearly a couple of grand to get permission for a title to be sold in a sex shop and yet no protection against the pirates. Now that sucks.

Streaming DRM is no big problem for copiers Deuce.
All you need to do is play on full screen and route the Video Out connector from a decent graphics card to a VCR or DVD recorder and thats it.

well, I've seen the future technolgy - Its called 'blue Ray' and its basically a DVD format that has got copy protection 'CIA style'.
This is a couple of years away, but this storm can be weathered and may be copying can be reduced.
being totally hypocritical though, where I used to work, 3 of us clubbed in a fiver for a porno DVD , copied it, and shared it out.
Its just the way it is. I heard that 90% of all Microsoft Office working copies around the world are ripped off.

My advice is, make a great product and people will buy it and rip it. make a shit product and no one will buy it, but it will probably stil get ripped!
Here enduth this lesson.
Rob.

I could be wrong (and most probably am) but this is my understanding of what the UK copyright laws were and what they are now under the European Regulations.

Under the old UK laws I believe it was permissible for a person who had purchased legitimate copyrighted material to make 1 (archive or backup) copy for their own personal use?

Under the new European Regulations I believe this is no longer the case and making any copy of copyrighted material is illegal (unless the copyright owner gives express permission) BUT, by the same token, I believe the European Regulations prohibit producers of material from employing and using copy protection coding.

As I said, I'm probably totally wrong so maybe someone who's really in the know will correct me.
