Sky Digital Update - Getting R18 Ready?

Post by Dizzy »

Hi all,

I heard on the satellite grapevine that Sky are releasing an update (very slowly) to all the different models of Sky box ready for upcoming changes...

...apart from a couple of tweaks to make those annoying on screen icons dissappear after a few seconds and an extra digit to the Radio channels setup to allow a hell of a lot more channels there is going to ... wait for it...

... be an update to the channel switching system so that like it or not changing channels to an adult subscription channel requires the system pin to be entered!

This sounds bad at first (especially for channel switchers like me) but it could also mean that Sky want to offer R18 content and are doing all they can to govern who sees the content (no pin no viewing).

Also there is some talk of the removal of adult tv listings from the program guide which unless the pin is entered which only serves to backup the rumour with more details on what would appear to be a pretty goog approach to Sky doing their part to get the ball rolling

BTW, Don't try to force a software update (if you know how that is) as the new functionality will get to you by the end if June (phased roll-out by manufacturer\model). The completion date for the work seems to coincide with the regualtory announcement so I don't know if Sky have an inside scoop?

Heres hoping!!!!

this update, which i already have, has been rolling out for a few weeks now and the same theory occurred to me. the enhanced blocking aspect is optional and supplemental to any existing pin access requirements.

details/screenshots.

i was going to bring it to the attention of this thread, for the reasons you mention but never got around to it.

Do we not think it may be Sky's way of trying to make it easier for parents to keep kids away from the adult channels? Rather than enable R18 stuff on TV.

Mobile phone companies did a similar thing where you had to register yourself as over 18.

Seems to me more of a "protection" against under age viewers than anything else.

Perhaps, but it is necessary to defeat any argument about ease of access to "unsuitable" material for minors. Putting it in place kills that at a stroke as it becomes an issue of parental responsibility. Sky will be more secure than DVD players.

True KJ,

But Sky don't care about DVD players. Sky care about kids not being able to watch it on their service.

R18 on TV seems too big a step at the moment, surely before we get there we will see it being allowed to be sold on the high street.
Considering how long it took for hadcore to become legal, seems very quick if it became ok on TV now.
