They are basically a RSS Syndication feed, which in English is a web feed of audio or video files placed on the Internet for anyone to subscribe to.
Subscribing to podcasts allows you to collect audio/video from a variety of sources for listening or viewing offline at whatever time and place is convenient for you.
Think of it a bit like a TV broadcast that you record and watch later.
