Anyone sick of DVD's scratching?

Post by Alex »

Anyone noticed that unless you handle porn DVDs like the holiest of holies they end up scratched and feckin unplayable? It's a downer paying ?25 for a disk and it being unplayable within 6 months. Think I prefer video.

Oh god, the old "indestructible CD". What a load of shit that was. They're even more fragile than vinyl.

For porn, which is always way too expensive for what it is, maybe you could get a DVD burner and back it up, then only use the backups for viewing? Blank DVD-Rs are only about 20p if you buy in 50s and you'll save a hell of a lot of dosh on ruined originals.

Never had any problems with this, but then I always put them back in the box when I have watched them.

I've had a couple that have become a bit dodgy.

I always use Brasso, lightly rubbed in to the disc with a soft cloth and then wipe clean always does the trick.

Yeah, too true!!!

I have 30-40 year old vinyl records that are in better condition after god-knows how many plays than some 5/6 month old CDs!

As for DVDs... absolute shite! I bought The Godfather box set a year or so ago... maybe a dozen plays between them and my player is already having problems reading the discs. However, tapes I made off-air on an old VCR are as good as ever after probably several dozen plays each!

So much for "new technology"... we are in fact going backwards!

In 1969 we put a man on the moon and had the first test flights of a transatlantic supersonic passenger air liner... now it takes twice as long to cross the Atlantic (even longer when you add the extra 4 hours needed to get through customs and immigration at both ends) and we're barely capabable of sending men in orbit around the earth and getting them back home safely!

"But how to make Liverpool economically prosperous? If only there was some way for Liverpudlians to profit from going on and on about the past in a whiny voice."

Hi,

DVD's can be a little sensitive. We have a note about it in our FAQ.

It goes like this;

With loving care and attention, your disc could last forever!
Your DVD has a protective layer over its short pit length and narrow tracks. Scratches and dirt can create problems in playback.

To prevent fingerprints, don't touch the disc surface. Remove disc from its case as directed, or by pressing down the 'push' button on the center hub, then gently lift disc by its outer edge. Your DVD is only 0.6mm thick and can easily bend or twist. Never remove disc solely by prying its outer edge. Insert single-sided disc with artwork/titles upwards. Check it is properly seated inside player before closing drawer.

Don't stack discs. Store in its case when not in use. Do not store near extreme heat or in direct sunlight near a window or in a car. If necessary, clean with a soft, damp, lint-free cloth. Wipe disc carefully, using straight motions from the inside hole to the outer edge. Do not rub or use circular motions. Do not use abrasive cleaning agents. If you encounter playing problems, remove disc, check to see it was properly inserted, clean as directed and try again.

That's my two cents worth.

Assuring you of the best possible attention at all times.

As I said I've had no trouble with any of my DVDs some of which are now five years old, they just need looking after. You can't compare them to VCR recordings as the quality of VCR is shit compared to DVD.

As for going backwards, I think not. Ok Concorde isn't flying anymore, but how many people could afford to fly on Concorde 30 years ago? Off the top of my head, now we have powerful computers that don't require a whole room of space, the internet, gps and satnav, cars are a heck of a lot safer than 1976 and to watch porn you don't have to wear a dirty mac anymore.

Inherent difficulty..

Post by Alex »

The inherent difficulty I have with "carefully removing the disk before carefully placing back in the box" is that I am usually..ahem..."becoming one with the force"...at the time and tend not to be at my most delicate and patient when swapping over DVD's.
